Kalgoorlie Rest Day

After 4 days in the saddle it was perfect timing to have a rest day today off the bike. The whole team enjoyed a sleep in and a lazy breakfast before wandering around the shops of Kalgoorlie and catching up on washing.

In the afternoon we donned safety vests, hard hats and safety glasses instead of riding vests, bike helmets and sunnies, and headed to the Kalgoorlie Corporate Gold Mine, known as the “Super Pit”. It is a massive operation right on the edge of town with a hole stretching over 600m deep and many km’s around. Defiinitely worth a look if in Kalgoorlie.

It was great to take the opportunity to relax and reflect on what we have achieved over the past 4 days. 8 cyclists have ridden a total of 595km with our longest day being 225km. We have ridden in rain on day 1, heat on day 2, and cool temperatures with a magnificent tailwind for the past 2 days.

Two of our cyclists, Manni and Purdi, finish their trip here today in Kalgoorlie. A massive thank you to both these experienced cyclists who helped guide us along the road safely and provided us with some highly amusing antics. Not sure Manni has a career in singing but she sure has an incredible appetite for food of any description. Is Red Rooster carbo loading?

Our volunteers John, Janette, Cam, and Baz, are revelling in their roles as Ride Managers and Bike Mechanics, and all have gone above and beyond expectations in their duties keeping us safe on the road, very well fed, and our bikes in good working order. The riders have enjoyed their time on the road getting to know each other with plenty of banter and laughter to help keep the k’s rolling by. The locals seem very interested in our ride and START Foundation, and we have felt welcome at each town we have stayed in.

Thanks to the following major sponsors who have helped us with our transport logistics from Perth to Kalgoorlie and enabled us to complete Stage 1 of Ride For The RAH:

ROLA Australia – Roof racks/Bike Racks, Enclosed Trailer, Petrol Voucher
Avis – 12 Seater Mini-Van
Europcar – Mitsubishi Pajero

Here are a few highlight shots from the week plus today.
