Our people

Our Board is made up of a diverse group of highly motivated professionals. Each member brings a range of expert skills and experience to START foundation. Together we work to fulfill our objective of “empowering amputees in life through sport.”

Kerryn Harvey

Founding Director

Having spent 18 years working in the health and fitness industry, 15 years of which were in the not-for-profit sector, I have a broad range of skills to bring to the START foundation, including human resources, business and membership management, customer service, marketing, sales and OH&S.

My biggest passion in life has always been sport and fitness. Nothing gives me greater satisfaction than having a sporting goal, training for the event, successfully reaching the finishing line and then celebrating the achievement with friends and family. I’ve been fortunate enough to complete many triathlons - from sprint distance to ironman, fun runs - from 5k to marathon and cycling events - from 20km to 2000km.

After acquiring a permanent disability five years ago, regaining my fitness and participating in sport gave me the confidence to believe I could do anything I set my mind to. I am so proud of the START foundation and what we have been able to achieve so far. I believe everyone should have the opportunity to participate in sport and look forward to helping more amputees achieve their sporting dreams.

Michelle Jelleff

Founding Director/Chair

My two passions are sport and education, both of which foster empowerment and confidence. It’s these two passions and my friendship with Kerryn that drew me to the START Foundation. I bring a range of skills and experience to the foundation, including leadership, governance and financial management from over 25-years working in education and sporting organisations in Australia and the United States.

Kerryn and I have shared numerous sporting achievements over the years, but her courage, determination and resolve have been extraordinary since her accident and exceed all previous accomplishments. She demonstrates every day that so much can be achieved when you set yourself goals, break them down into realistic milestones and have the right support networks around you.

START foundation assists amputees to achieve their sporting dreams, to discover the strength of empowerment and through growing confidence, the endless possibilities to reshape their lives.

Louise Roberts

Director - Finance/Company Secretary

I am a professional CPA and a successful senior finance executive, with over 20 years of experience in Australia and the UK. I have worked in a variety of business environments including aerospace, shared services and property. I enjoy leading the finance function and being involved in the development and delivery of START foundations business strategy.

The opportunity to make a contribution, utilise my experience and work with the highly motivated START team to help amputees achieve their sporting dreams, is very exciting.

I enjoy keeping fit, have been heavily involved with tennis, and have been a netball player, coach and umpire over the years. I believe that playing sport and keeping fit is an important part of life and has a unique ability to build confidence and bring people together.

Don elgin

Director - Paralympian & Advocate

Being born without the lower half of my left leg provided many learning opportunities as a child. Fortunately, I found a passion for sport in my early childhood. This passion grew to a whole new level upon learning of the Paralympics. Having spent many years playing sport and representing Australia at an elite level, I’ve come into contact with countless amputees and understand the importance of the journey amputees go on. The one thing that’s really clear to me is regardless of whether a person aspires to take on the world in sport or simply to blend back into day to day living, all people with disabilities seek to live as normal a life possible, without the burden of their disability restricting them.

Offering leadership and giving back to the community are extremely important to me. I was the inaugural patron of Disability Professionals Victoria and Limbs4life. I am a former president of Sandringham Athletics Club and former vice President of The Amputee Association of Victoria. All these roles have enabled me to share my knowledge, experience and motivation to make a positive difference to people’s lives.

The exciting thing about START foundation is, knowing that through the organisation’s initiatives, amputees all over the country will have an opportunity to live their lives to the full.

Matt Bycroft

Director - Law & Corporate Governance

I am a corporate lawyer with a specialist practice in sports law. I have been fortunate enough to combine my career with my love of sport, by providing straightforward practical and commercial legal advice to a range of clients of different sizes and industries, including small businesses, not-for-profit organisations, government departments, national bodies and international organisations.

Being a passionate sportsperson, I’m grateful to have the opportunity to assist the START foundation to help amputees fulfill their dreams through participation in sport. The benefits of sport are wide reaching and not only include improved health, but importantly, a sense of community and the ability to build lasting relationships.

I’m an active participant in numerous sports, and have played Australian Rules Football and Cricket at various levels over the years. This has provided me with great friends, support and wonderful memories.

The START Foundation offers great support for amputees throughout Australia to participate in sport in their chosen field and I look forward to helping them grow.

Jennifer Ervin

Director - Marketing, Media & Sponsorship

I am a veterinarian with a public health interest who has worked in numerous sectors of the veterinary industry. For the last decade, I have been in a professional consulting role for a global veterinary corporate company. This experience allows me to bring a suite of commercial skills to START, including developing and managing key stakeholder relationships and partnerships, program development and delivery, as well as marketing and strategic planning.

My future drive and passion lies within the women’s health space, with a particular focus on the complexities of gender equity in the social justice arena. Empowering people, especially women, with disabilities through my position on the START Foundation Board is an exciting new opportunity for which I am very grateful to be able to contribute.

As a keen outdoor adventurer myself, enabling amputees to realise their sporting and personal dreams through START is something I feel very passionate about. Be it through hiking, surfing, swimming, skiing or mountain bike riding, I am at my very happiest in the great outdoors. Whatever your sporting inspiration, I believe every person should have the opportunity to access their physical “happy place” and live life to the fullest. So, I can’t wait to work with START foundation to assist amputees to achieve this!
